Hello, my name is Phil Herink. I’m proud to be the CEO of Schick Shadel Hospital just outside of Seattle. We have been treating patients with substance use disorders since 1935.
What is especially gratifying to me is to hear patients say that we helped them get their lives back on track. Our 10-day treatment program has been scientifically proven to eliminate cravings so our patients have a better chance of maintaining long-term sobriety. The truth is that the journey really begins after they complete the initial ten days of treatment.
Every Friday, I host a CEO roundtable meeting with all of our patients. I begin the meeting by reinforcing what they have learned from their care team providers. After they leave us and go back out into the world, it’s important that they follow their aftercare program. This will help heal any underlying psychological issues that may be preventing them from staying sober. The aftercare plan is tailored to meet the individual patient’s needs. This includes returning to Schick for a 30- and 90-day reinforcement treatment session that lasts two days. It may also include a referral to a counselor or attending a Schick alumni support group in their community.
Each of the patients at the roundtable meeting then shares part of their story. They often express their appreciation for the help they are receiving and many talk about bonding with their fellow patients. They even vow to keep in touch with each other for long-term support. One patient recently said to me “It must really feel good to work at a place that helps people get the monkey off their back.” And yes, helping people who have a genetic predisposition to addiction is one of the reasons I love my job.
Our patients also comment on how much they appreciate our compassionate care team – physicians, nurses and support staff. This sentiment is reflected in our consistently high patient satisfaction scores and very positive comments. One of the most common patient comments is “After trying several different treatment options, I finally went to Schick and it worked! I wish I’d gone there first.”
If you are interested in learning more about our program, we would be glad to answer any questions you may have. If you live in the Seattle area or plan to visit, please schedule a tour with us. We would love to give you a chance to meet our providers and staff and get a more in-depth look at the program.
