Drug Addiction Counseling Services

Support from Schick Shadel

Schick Shadel Hospital’s Counseling Department services are delivered as part of a comprehensive multi-disciplinary treatment team. The Counseling Department’s assessments are done by Washington State Certified Chemical Dependency Professionals in conjunction with our clinical staff. In addition to our other services, while here, patients attend four psycho-educational non-AA groups a day focused on Relapse-Prevention Skills Building. While we let patients know it’s important to embrace their own private spirituality, Schick Shadel doesn’t lecture on or promote any religious teachings in our counselor-led lectures.

Our patients are actively involved with their treatment planning process and in identifying their needs and strengths for sobriety. The personalized treatment plan created during patients’ 10-day stay helps to guide the counselor in their individual sessions every other day. The patient is assigned reading and homework in their counseling sessions, which includes “The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz, to assist in their growth and understanding.

We incorporate “The Four Agreements” principles in our process groups, namely:

  • Be Impeccable With Your Word
  • Don’t Take Anything Personally
  • Don’t Make Assumptions
  • Always Do Your Best

Mapping Out a Plan for Success

The individual and their counselor, in their last session, develop a continuing care plan for when patient returns to their lives, families, and work. The continuing care plan is based on their specific needs. Resources are given to patients, including specific referrals for follow-up counseling and meetings.
