New York City Doctor Arrested For Writing an Alleged 14,000 Unnecessary Opiate Prescriptions

A New York City doctor was arrested for reportedly providing thousands of opioid prescriptions to patients on Monday, June 5. He provided prescriptions to some patients despite knowing that they were addicted to the prescription painkillers he was giving them access to.

According to authorities who discussed the case with the New York Daily News, Dr. Martin Tesher, an 81-year-old physician based out of Manhattan, wrote more than 14,000 unnecessary prescriptions for oxycodone over a five-year stretch, totaling about $20 million worth of opiates, or approximately 2.2 million individual pills.

Dr. Tesher lists himself as a pain management specialist on his website, but according to the Daily News report didn’t hesitate to write a prescription for a New York Police Department (NYPD) informant that would allow them to take as many as 15 pills per day for an entire month even though the doctor believed his patient struggled with addiction.

Another NYPD informant patient of Dr. Tesher reportedly told him that they struggled with addiction, but was still given a prescription for “hundreds” of pills during each visit to Dr. Tesher’s office.

“[Dr. Tesher] used his position as a doctor not to heal but to foster opioid addiction,” said acting Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Bridget Rohde.

Dr. Tesher was charged with distributing a controlled substance, and faces up to 20 years in prison. He was released on a $250,000 bond on Monday, June 5.
