Schick Shadel Hospital was founded in 1935 by Charles A. Shadel. A pioneer of his time, Shadel understood what very few in his time knew: alcoholism is a disease, a neurological illness that is mentally and emotionally incredibly difficult to control or manage. Unlike many of his peers, Shadel understood that addiction was not a result of weak willpower or moral failure, but rather a physiological response to stimuli. He worked to treat addiction on the level that it existed: as part of a neurological response. As a result of his work, Schick Shadel developed a method of treatment we called “counter conditioning.”

For 80 years Schick Shadel Hospital (SSH) has been committed to providing a supportive and compassionate environment and the highest level of patient care and satisfaction to the diverse population we serve. SSH embraces patients of different race, religion, color, gender, sexual orientation age, national origin, disability, marital status, and effective, unique and proven medical treatment for people with substance use disorders to help them live a clean and sober life.

Groundbreaking Addiction Treatment in the Seattle Area

Drug and alcohol addiction is devastating to human psychology and physiology. Chemical dependency works by programming the body and mind to demand continuous stimulation through substances like alcohol, prescription painkillers, heroin, and other drugs. These substances condition the mind to associate it with pleasure in the same way that the brain associates survival activities with pleasure. As a result, the brain begins to make decisions out of a neurological desire for drugs or alcohol in the same way that the brain craves food and water.

Our 10-day counter conditioning program empowers our patients to focus on what truly matters: rebuilding their relationships and living the life they were meant to live.

This then creates a vicious cycle by which drugs or alcohol compel the body and mind to fool itself into needing an addictive substance, causing a person to ingest it, which then allows the substance to influence the mind even further. It is a destructive and almost entirely physiological process. Drugs and alcohol hijack the mind’s processes intended for survival and co-opt it for damaging chemicals. Incredible willpower would be needed to break this cycle, but even in the best of circumstances, most of a recovering patient’s energy is spent fighting his or her own co-opted survival instincts and withdrawal.

This is where counter conditioning comes in. Rather than depending on a patient’s willpower alone, counter conditioning helps people break their addiction cycle by taking back control of their brain’s processes. Counter conditioning works by retraining the brain to no longer desire addictive substances, or to even respond to them with displeasure. By treating the addiction on a physiological level, we give patients the ability to spend their time and energy on rebuilding their lives, conquering emotional dependency, and allowing counseling to heal the personal damage caused by addiction.
