Treatment Programs for Drug or Alcohol Addiction
Perhaps you, or someone you know, has tried to break a drug addiction or alcohol addiction, and failed to do so despite the best intentions. Addiction treatment programs, well-meaning people and willpower may not have been enough to bring recovery from alcohol or drug addiction.
Addiction is a neurological disease - not a mental or moral problem. Since 1935, Schick Shadel Hospital addiction treatment programs have been helping tens of thousands of men and women lose the craving for alcohol and other drugs. The hospital’s addiction treatment programs are successful in an atmoshphere of understanding and acceptance.
Staffed by caring, compassionate physicians, nurses and counselors, our addiction treatment programs recognize that addiction is “a compulsive physiological need for a habit forming substance” (American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 3rd Edition). Therefore, the person suffering from alcohol addiction, drug addiction or another chemical addiction is ill and in need of medical treatment. Our treatment programs provide a researched, medical alternative to many of the other treatment modalities available. Addiction treatment can be completed discreetly, with just a 10-day rehab and two, two-day follow-up visits.
Addiction Treatment Services
The Schick Shadel addiction treatment programs include the following services:
Medical detoxification treatment when necessary upon first arrival
Detoxification treatment is the process of monitoring and administering medical treatment, to a person experiencing alcohol or other drug withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms vary from being very uncomfortable to being life threatening.
Schick Shadel Hospital’s detoxification treatment provides patients with a safe, comfortable transition through the addiction withdrawal period. Physicians certified in addiction medicine direct Schick’s detoxification treatment. Registered nurses, with many years of training and experience, provide compassionate and supportive care for patients. This care uses safe detoxification techniques aimed at diminishing and alleviating the discomfort of addiction withdrawal.
The safe detoxification techniques used at Schick include; the administration of medications to counteract the uncomfortable symptoms, attention to nutritional repair, evaluation of any other medical problems, and assessment of ongoing needs following alcohol detoxification.
Medical addiction treatment for the chemically dependent, including:
- Aversion Therapy (Emetic or Faradic)
- Emetic is used for alcohol counter conditioning unless not advisable due to individual patient medical limitations.
- Faradic counter conditioning is used for alcohol, marijuana, opiates (oxy, oxycodone, OxyContin, including other prescription pain killers), Vicodin and crystal methamphetamine (crystal meth or other amphetamines).
- Counseling / Education
- Rehabilitation Interview (minimal sedation)
- Relaxation Therapy
- All pharmacy and laboratory services
Our research found that aversion therapy (retraining the memory against the pleasurable aspects of using alcohol or drugs) produced excellent results. Schick’s #1 Success Rated treatment program for alcohol addiction is the basis for the Schick treatment of other drug dependencies, including alcohol, marijuana, opiates (oxy, oxycodone, OxyContin, including other prescription pain killers), Vicodin, and crystal methamphetamine (crystal meth or other amphetamines)
Treatment consists of alternating days of aversion therapy treatment under medical supervision and relaxing minimal sedation and relaxation therapy. The rehabilitation interviews or minimal sedation sessions are the favorite aspect of the treatment program. When alumni return for regular support groups or celebrations, they recall these relaxed state sessions and even want to repeat them. The purpose of the minimal sedation is to monitor the level of conditioning occurring in treatment, then identify potential counseling issues. Also of great benefit is the use of patient directed, “permissive affirmations” during these sessions. Incorporating these affirmations can potentially help patients attain their personal goals for recovery.
A treatment recovery program for alcohol and drug addiction
Aversion therapy is not a “silver bullet: Schick’s professional counselors help patients create a plan for the addiction recovery program. As the plan supports healing from the effects of alcohol and drugs, our counselors help patients change their lifestyle patterns; guiding them toward non-chemical rewards to encourage personal growth. Our patients are supported in many ways, through both their created plan and the addiction recovery program.
- Intensive educational meetings are held for the patients and family members, if requested.
- Patients receive individual and group counseling treatment.
- Medical staff is available 24-hours-a-day.
You’ll need the addiction recovery plan to change your lifestyle and solve problems when they arise, for they will arise. You’ll need a plan to stay away from people and places where drugs and alcohol are used. Your plan will show you how to respond to those you love, those you work with and other people, in open, honest relationships.
Discharge planning
Part of each patients addiction recovery plan, is to encourage achieving positive future recovery after discharge. Counseling for discharge planning helps our patients to stay off the “slippery slope” of potential relapse, while aversion allows the ability to refrain from drugs or drink. Our patients are helped to focus on true friends, to use people for support when experiencing negative feelings and to avoid people, places and activities that were strongly associated with the addiction.
To help support recovery, Schick Shadel provides follow-up care after discharge from treatment. Our caring staff contacts patients on a regular basis, to encourage them in their new found sobriety. In addition, patients are free to contact a counselor at any time if there is a need after completion of the hospital’s treatment.
Involvement with support groups is encouraged.
Reinforcement treatment sessions at 30-day and 90-day intervals
Following the 10-day inpatient aversion conditioning, patients will return at 30 and 90 days to Schick Shadel Hospital for two-day reinforcement sessions. During these follow-up aversion conditioning reinforcements, interviews are conducted and updates to the continuing care plan are made. Reinforcement has proven significant to continuing sobriety and a clean and sober lifestyle.
