Methamphetamine (Meth) Treatment Programs
The Schick Shadel methamphetamine (also known as meth) treatment program offers medical care to stop the devastating cycle of meth addiction. We know that meth addiction is neurological and that meth is a habit-forming substance. Over 75 years of research into alcohol addiction has demonstrated excellent results using Counter Conditioning treatment. Schick Shadel Hospital has the #1 Success Rate for alcohol treatment. Our medically based program for meth addiction was built on this strong foundation of success and the principles of aversion treatment.
Methamphetamine and the Brain
Meth use releases the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain area associated with pleasure receptors, producing a powerful "high" after meth use. Over time the brain responds to meth use by reducing the number of dopamine receptors in the brain, thus increasing the amount and frequency of use of methamphetamine needed for a "high". A "crash" results when the effects of meth dissipate. This chemical crash causes the meth addict to seek more of the drug and creates a cycle of addiction to meth. The Schick Shadel meth treatment program addresses the physical causes of meth dependence to eliminate, neutralize and/or attenuate drug craving (hunger) in just 10 days.
Schick Shadel Hospital is staffed by addiction medicine specialty physicians, caring nurses and national Certified Addiction Therapists. Addiction medicine specialty physicians are certified by the American Society for Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and/or the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in Psychiatry and Addiction. Our meth treatment program recognizes that meth addiction requires medical treatment. Schick Shadel Hospital drug treatment offers medical treatment, psychological counseling, drug and alcohol education, relapse prevention planning and recovery planning, simultaneously, to address all of the inputs to meth dependence. The initial inpatient phase of our meth treatment program can be completed in ten (10) days. Patients return to the hospital at about 30 and 90 days post-discharge for a two day inpatient stay to receive follow-up booster (reinforcement) sessions, rehabilitation interviews, as well as counseling and supportive services.

Medical Detoxification Treatment if Necessary
Medical detoxification for methamphetamine dependence is not necessary. Although the patient may suffer an amphetamine abstinence syndrome, this is not a medically significant situation. Patients may experience lethargy, anergy, fatigue, hypersomnia, loss of appetite, irritability, difficulty concentrating and a sad mood, but there are no inherent safety issues in stopping methamphetamine use, abruptly or slowly.
Patients may be started in rehabilitation the day of admission if they have not used methamphetamine within 24 hours prior to admission, are judged to be medically stable, and are in the hospital no later than 0800 the day of admission. The patient must not be dependent on some other substance that may require medical detoxification, for example alcohol, opioids or sedative-hypnotics, such as, lorazepam.

Medical Treatments
Treatment for meth addiction at Schick Shadel Hospital includes two unique medical (somatic) therapies. Aversion treatment is intended to eliminate, neutralize or weaken the drug hunger/craving that methamphetamine users have in response to the abstinence syndrome and to cues/triggers that have developed over time. Chemical or nausea aversion deconditioning is the primary form of aversion treatment used.
Faradic treatment is another form of aversion treatment. These treatments repeatedly pair an unpleasant physical and psychological experience with exposure to a methamphetamine-like substitute, drug use ritual and paraphernalia without intoxication to create an aversion to drug related cues and intrusive obsessions about the drug. Psychological covert desensitization techniques may also be used if indicated.
Rehabilitation interviews, the second medical treatment, are a form of medication facilitated hypnotherapy intended to permit confirmatory interviewing, aversion development optimization, and cue response monitoring. Patients experience these treatments as a pleasant respite from the demands of treatment and at times a source of personal insight.

Discharge Planning
Each meth treatment plan contains steps to encourage recovery after discharge. Counseling for discharge planning helps our patients avoid the "slippery slope" of potential relapse. Counter conditioning treatment relieves the person of meth craving, replacing craving with a neutral, absent or repulsive response to usual meth cues. Relief from meth craving and triggers permits patients an extended period in which to apply other tools and information to recover and prevent relapse. Our patients learn to focus on true friends, to use people for support when experiencing negative feelings and to avoid people, places and activities that were strongly associated with meth.
Schick Shadel provides follow-up care after discharge from treatment. For two years our caring staff contacts patients regularly to encourage them in their new-found sobriety. After hospital treatment, patients can contact a counselor anytime it's necessary.
Involvement with support groups is encouraged, including hospital based, hospital associated and community based. Long term participation in treatment reduces the likelihood of relapse.
Scheduled Follow up Visits
Following the 10-day inpatient coounter conditioning, patients will return at about 30 and 90 days to Schick Shadel Hospital for two, two-day reinforcement sessions. During these follow-ups, the aversion is reinforced to strengthen and maintain, sedation interviews are conducted, and the continuing care plan is updated. Reinforcement is an important part of maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle.
