Drug Treatment Programs
Schick Shadel drug treatment programs offer medical care in an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance. We know that drug addiction is in part a neurological disease - not a failure of willpower. The Schick Shadel drug treatment is a non-12 step program that addresses the medical causes of drug addiction resulting in the elimination or mitigation of drug hunger.
Physicians are specialist in addiction medicine, certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and/or the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Caring nurses and national Certified Addiciton Therapists are also on staff. Our drug treatment programs recognize that addiction is an illness that can benefit from medical as well as other modalities of treatment. Schick Shadel drug treatment offers medical treatment and psychological counseling to simultaneously address many of the inputs to drug addiction. After medical detoxification, if indicated, drug treatment patients will complete an initial 10 day inpatient treatment program followed by two to four, two day inpatient follow-ups. These are generally at 30 and 90 days post-discharge.

Medical Detoxification Treatment if Necessary
Drug detoxification treatment includes monitoring and medical treatment for drug withdrawal symptoms. The symptoms of drug withdrawal can vary depending on the type of drug to which a patient is addicted. Speak to one of our addiction professionals for more information about drug-specific withdrawal symptoms or visit our addiction assessment pages.
Schick Shadel drug treatment programs are available for marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and prescription opioids. We do not treat persons who primarily inject drugs or persons who are addicted to benzodiazepine.
Schick Shadel Hospital's drug detoxification treatment provides patients with a safe, comfortable transition through the withdrawal period. Physicians certified in addiction medicine direct detoxification treatment that is individualized for each patient. Registered nurses, with many years of training and experience care for our patients. Our safe and comfortable detoxification techniques attenuate drug withdrawal symptoms and prevent serious complications. Our staff administers medications to counteract uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, pays attention to nutritional needs, evaluates coexisting medical problems, and assesses the patient's ongoing needs following drug detoxification. The amount of time necessary for drug detoxification will vary according to the type and length of drug addiction, usually zero to five days.
Over 75 years of research into alcohol addiction have shown that Counter Conditioning (retraining the memory against the pleasurable aspects of using drugs) produces excellent results. Schick Shadel Hospital has the #1 Success Rate for alcohol treatment. Our program for drug addiction was built on this strong foundation of documented success.

Discharge Planning
Each treatment plan contains steps to encourage recovery after discharge. Counseling for discharge planning helps our patients avoid the "slippery slope" of potential relapse. Counter conditioning treatment relieves the person of craving, replacing it with a neutral, absent or repulsive response to usual drug cues. Relief from craving and triggers permits patients an extended period in which to apply other tools and information to recover and prevent relapse. Our patients learn to focus on true friends, to use people for support when experiencing negative feelings and to avoid people, places and activities that were strongly associated with drug use.
Schick Shadel provides follow-up care after discharge from drug treatment. For two years our caring staff contacts patients regularly to encourage them in their new-found sobriety. After hospital treatment, patients can contact a counselor anytime it's necessary.
Involvement with support groups is encouraged, including hospital based, hospital associated and community based. Long term participation in treatment reduces the likelihood of relapse.
Scheduled Follow up Visits After Drug Treatment
Following the 10-day inpatient counter conditioning, patients will return at about 30 and 90 days to Schick Shadel Hospital for two, two-day reinforcement sessions. During these follow-ups, the aversion is reinforced to strengthen and maintain, sedation interviews are conducted, and the continuing care plan is updated. Reinforcement is an important part of maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle.
