Cocaine Treatment Programs
Schick Shadel Hospital cocaine treatment program is a highly effective program for cocaine addiction. Using Counter Conditioning, the Schick Shadel cocaine treatment program eliminates, neutralizes or attenuates cue-induced cocaine cravings in program participants. Banished or weakened cocaine cravings may even be replaced with abstinence-promoting cocaine revulsions in some persons. For over 75 years, Schick Shadel Hospital treatment programs have offered successful non-12-step treatment primarily for alcoholism. The Schick Shadel cocaine treatment program can be completed with an initial ten day inpatient stay and two, two day follow-up inpatient stays at 30 and 90 days post-discharge. In general, cocaine dependency per se does not require medical detoxification.
Unlike other programs, Schick Shadel Hospital recognizes that cocaine addiction is actually a physical need for the drug. Cocaine addiction is an illness that requires medical treatment. Our cocaine treatment program helps people lose the craving for cocaine by addressing the root medical causes of cocaine addiction. Aversion treatment, extinction and covert sensitization therapies, as well as cognitive-behavioral restructuring are the means by which cocaine cue induced craving and free-floating intrusive cocaine hunger are eliminated, neutralized or attenuated.
Physicians at Schick Shadel are American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and/or American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) certified in Addiction Medicine.

Medical Detoxification
In general cocaine addiction does not require medical detoxification. When cocaine addicts who have used cocaine on a frequent basis discontinue cocaine use abruptly they may experience an uncomfortable abstinence syndrome. This syndrome is not medically significant.
The abstinence syndrome may include a short period of increased sleep, irritability, enervation, and fatigue. The patient may feel depressed and amotivational. It passes quickly and is of no safety concern to the patient generally.
Most cocaine addicted patients are able to begin the ten day treatment program the day of or day after admission.
Inpatient Treatment
The cocaine treatment program consists of alternating days of Counter Conditioning and minimal conscious sedation therapy, called rehabilitation interviews. This alternating treatment program allows our medical staff to monitor the level of conditioning that is occurring, and identify any potential counseling issues. Rehabilitation interviews are a form of sedative assisted hypnotherapy sessions which permit level of aversion monitoring, history verification, and optimization of aversion development through post-hypnotic suggestions. Relaxation therapies are an adjunct to learning stress recognition and management.

Planning for Discharge From TreatmentEach patient's recovery and relapse prevention plan contains steps to encourage recovery and continuing abstinence after discharge. Discharge planning helps each patient to customize a plan to prevent a drug relapse, while Counter Conditioning allows the patient to remain drug-free. Schick Shadel Hospital discharge planning helps patients learn to focus on supportive friends and family members, to rely on trusted people and avoid the people, places and activities that were strongly associated with cocaine use in the past.
Schick Shadel provides follow-up care after discharge. Aftercare groups at the hospital and community based support group participation is encouraged. Our caring staff contacts patients regularly to encourage them, even after treatment. Patients can also contact a counselor anytime it's necessary.
Involvement with support groups is always encouraged.
Two, Two-Day Reinforcement Visits
Following the 10-day inpatient aversion conditioning, patients will return at 30 and 90 days to Schick Shadel Hospital for two, two-day reinforcement sessions. During these visit aversion treatment and rehabilitation interviews are conducted. The patient's recovery and relapse plan is updated.
Reinforcement is an important part of maintaining a clean, drug-free lifestyle. Booster counter conditioning treatments strengthen and maintain the aversion, which will continue to provide patients with freedom from cue induced craving and free-floating intrusive drug hunger to assist in recovery and abstinence.

Our patients receive support through both their recovery plan and the Schick Shadel program. Educational meetings are available for patients and family members.
The recovery and relapse prevention plans assist each patient to implement their unique lifestyle changes and creates a framework for solving and avoiding problems as they arise. It helps each patient avoid people or situations where cocaine and other drugs are used. The recovery plan helps patients build open, honest relationships with the people that are important in their lives.
