Alcohol Treatment Programs

For over 75 years, Schick Shadel Hospital alcohol treatment programs have helped thousands of men and women lose the craving for alcohol. Schick Shadel alcohol treatment programs offer medical care in an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance. The Schick Shadel alcohol treatment program addresses the medical causes of alcohol addiction, because willpower, counseling and social support alone don't always work.

Staffed by caring, compassionate physicians, nurses and counselors, our alcohol treatment programs recognize that addiction is both physiological and psychological. Genetic predisposition and repeated exposure to alcohol can lead to addiction. Alcohol addiction is an illness requiring medical treatment. Our alcohol treatment programs provide researched medical treatment in tandem with psychological counseling to address the physiological craving for alcohol. After medical detoxification, if indicated, initial inpatient treatment can be completed usually within ten days. Follow-up hospitalization for two days each at 30 and 90 days post-discharge is strongly recommended.

Medical Detoxification Treatment When Necessary

Alcohol detoxification treatment includes monitoring and administering medicine to persons experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal may include irritability, shaking/tremors, excessive sweating, headache, racing pulse, anxiety and nausea/vomiting, and in a very small number of cases hallucinations, paranoia and confusion

Schick Shadel Hospital's alcohol medical detoxification treatment provides patients with a safe, comfortable transition through the withdrawal period. American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) certified physicians who specialize in addiction medicine direct the Schick Shadel Hospital detoxification treatment. Registered nurses, with many years of training and experience, provide safe, compassionate care for patients. Schick Shadel uses standardized, safe and effective detoxification techniques to help alleviate alcohol withdrawal symptoms including: medications to counteract uncomfortable symptoms and prevent complications, attention to nutritional needs, evaluation of co-existing medical problems, and an assessment of ongoing medical needs following alcohol detoxification.

Counter Conditioning and Rehabilitation Interviews

The Alcohol Treatment Program includes the use of behavioral modification techniques, individual counseling, education, and relaxation therapies. The behavior modification techniques may include chemical Counter Conditioning (nausea based) or electrical (faradic) Counter Conditioning. Cognitive behavioral techniques are applied to assist in the development of an aversion and to correct self-defeating thoughts and feelings.

Many years of research at Schick Shadel Hospital has established that Counter Conditioning (retraining the memory against the pleasurable aspects of using alcohol) in combination with standardized treatment produces excellent results. Schick Shadel Hospital has the #1 Success Rate for alcohol addiction treatment. Over many decades of treatment experience, the expected complete abstinence rate after completion of all recommended treatment at one year is 70 percent. This program provides the foundation for our treatment of cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and prescription opioids.

Alcohol treatment consists of alternating days of Counter Conditioning (at least 5) under medical supervision and restorative, conscious sedation and relaxation therapies (5 total). The conscious sedation treatments permit our medical staff to monitor the level of conditioning that is occurring, and identify any potential counseling issues. Medical staff are in the hospital daily and accessible 24 hours per day.

Discharge Planning

Each alcohol treatment plan contains steps to encourage recovery after discharge. Counseling for discharge planning helps our patients avoid the "slippery slope" of potential relapse. Counter conditioning treatment relieves the person of alcohol craving, replacing craving with a neutral, absent or repulsive response to usual alcohol cues. Relief from alcohol craving and triggers permits patients an extended period in which to apply other tools and information to recover and prevent relapse. Our patients learn to focus on true friends, to use people for support when experiencing negative feelings and to avoid people, places and activities that were strongly associated with drinking.

Schick Shadel provides follow-up care after discharge from treatment. For two years our caring staff contacts patients regularly to encourage them in their new-found sobriety. After hospital treatment, patients can contact a counselor anytime it's necessary.

Involvement with support groups is encouraged, including hospital based, hospital associated and community based. Long term participation in treatment reduces the likelihood of relapse.

Scheduled Follow up Visits

Following the 10-day inpatient aversion conditioning, patients will return at about 30 and 90 days to Schick Shadel Hospital for two, two-day reinforcement sessions. During these follow-ups, the aversion is reinforced to strengthen and maintain, sedation interviews are conducted, and the continuing care plan is updated. Reinforcement is an important part of maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle.

Recovery and Relapse Prevention Plans

In addition to Counter Conditioning treatment, Schick Shadel national Certified Addiction Therapists help patients create a plan for recovery, relapse prevention, and a life without alcohol. Both, individual and group counseling help patients change their lifestyle and guide them toward non-alcohol rewards. Our patients receive support through both their recovery plan and the Schick Shadel program. Educational meetings are available for patients and family members.

The recovery plan will help you change your lifestyle, solve problems as they arise and stay away from people and places where alcohol is used. Your recovery plan will also help you build open, honest relationships with people you know and love. Relapse prevention is addressed through education, skills training and psychological techniques.
