Boise Alcohol Treatment and Drug Programs

For over 75 years, Schick Shadel Hospital has treated people from Boise, Idaho to eliminate and neutralize their alcohol craving and drug hunger in just 10 days.

Schick Shadel Hospital treats people from Boise and surrounding areas who suffer from substance use disorders including alcohol, prescription opioids (OxyContin, MSContin, Percocet, Vicodin, etc,), cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.  Primary injection drug users are not treated. Medical detox treatment is also available.

The Schick Shadel Hospital programs are non-12 step based.  The major medical treatments included in all patients’ inpatient stays include counter conditioning treatments and rehabilitation interviewing (sedative assisted therapy). We offer drug and alcohol treatment to residents of Boise, Coeur D'Alene, Pocatello and other cities in Idaho.

Counter Conditioning Therapy eliminates, neutralizes or attenuates cue-induced alcohol and drug craving and frees the individual from addictive thoughts. Replacement of craving with substance revulsion is another goal of Counter Conditioning. Rehabilitation interviews are a sedative assisted form of therapy intended to optimize and monitor aversion development, and provide a respite.

All drug and alcohol treatment is prescribed and directed by American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and/or American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Addiction Medicine certified physicians.

Medical Detoxification Prior to Treatment

When indicated medical detoxification is provided prior to drug or alcohol treatment. Cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana users do not generally require medical detoxification. They can usually begin treatment the day of or day after admission. Alcohol dependent persons may require medical detoxification, usually not more than three days. Opioid detoxification may last as long as five days depending on the opioid used. We offer medical detoxification to patients who reside in the Boise area. Detoxification days do not count toward the initial ten day inpatient treatment program stay.

Reinforcement Sessions

Following the 10-day inpatient program, our patients return to Schick Shadel Hospital for reinforcement sessions. For non-opioids like alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine or marijuana, these sessions are at 30 and 90 days. The four opioid reinforcements are typically at 15 or 30, 60, 90 and no later than 180 days after discharge from treatment. These follow-up visits are paramount to the long term success of the patient. They strengthen and maintain aversion, allowing the patient a significant craving and drug free period to consolidate recovery and remain abstinent.

Fast Effective Therapy

Positive feedback from staff and fellow patient helps compound a positive attitude towards self and life. Treatment includes restoring the natural reward system with nutrition, exercise and rest. After medical treatment, a positive future is mapped by development of a continuing care plan. Our patients are helped to refocus on true friends, develop habits of reacting through supportive people, and when feeling bad, avoid people, places and activities that were strongly associated with alcohol/drug use. New, positive associations with people, places and activities that were not connected to alcohol/drug use are encouraged. The course is now set for learning to overcome denial by no longer blaming yourself, or others, for problems caused by alcohol or drug use.

Treatment involves retraining the alcoholic or addict against the alcohol/drug and toward a non-drinking/non-drug lifestyle. A short period of hospitalization is primarily necessary to assure that the addict’s craving and drive to use have been neutralized safely and effectively. Schick Shadel’s version of alcohol rehab and drug rehab targets the receptors which cause an individual to use chemicals in a dysfunctional manner.

The memory remains programmed to use unless a carefully timed and controlled program of alternating days of mild Counter Conditioning and minimal sedation assisted interview therapy helps relieve the desire to use. Gradually, the subconscious memory is reprogrammed to link drug/alcohol use with discomfort, and gradually the compulsion for the substance is relieved.

At this same time, the patient and family have learned about this disease and the necessity to keep free of the drug’s hold. A systematic plan for the patient’s recovery extending for two years after discharge has been developed. The patient is now ready to make use of the support resources available in the community. Our alcohol rehab and drug rehab programs give you the support you need to make it through the rough patches of sobriety.

Counter Conditioning does not make it impossible to use — it makes it possible not to use. Counter Conditioning restores your free will. The stronghold of the craving is broken. Our alcohol treatment program is one of the top alcohol treatment programs in the country.
